Technological Wizadry

by philghodg @ 2008-07-03 - 23:49:49

I started this as a comment to a friend's posting but decided to post it as a full Blog instead.

We are now at an age where the vast majority of people are becoming technically adept and technology is creeping in to virtually (!) eveything we do.

However, technology and people is a frustrating combination. Patience with technology is at a premium as the human element cannot cope with the slowness that occurs through excessive traffic or the crashing of machines or applications due to the whole system being dependant on a piece of mechanical hardware somewhere along the line.

The frustration that manifests itself can then sometimes be self destructive. Technology becomes bad so threats of ceasing to use it rise to the surface. We can't cope with having to wait for something so we get wracked off with it.

But the technology is not the problem. Our inability to design robust systems, reliable hardware and use the darn thing properly is the problem. Our need to run through our world at a 100 mph is the problem. We want it and we want it now!

Technology is wonderful (and you really don't know how long it has taken me to teach myself to say that!). To be able to communicate, through written word virtually (there's that word again!) instantaneously to someone on the opposite side of the world is a marvel. In a few minutes I'll press "save" and this will be available for reading to potentially thousands of people around the world.

And the Internet IS a wonderful place. It's filled with so much information and opportunity to learn. Ok, there are some dodgy areas but the vast majority is good. Life is like that - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly (cue the music).

So don't threaten the technology with excommunication when your Blog is slow or, heaven forbid, crashes altogether. Remember how wonderful it is. If you can't use it at anytime, come back to it later when the server has been rebooted or the software reinstalled.

Come back to it. Don't ever turn your back on it. Cause one day, it may turn it's back on you. And where will you be then!

:) I yell at it and moan at it, but can't live without it happily anymore...certainly wouldn't turn my back on it...it's definitely the speed thing that frustrates...but this is because we're promised decent speeds in downloads and uploads when we buy into a package. Unfortunately, nobody tells you that there are times when everybody wants to be on it at the same time and it's going to slow down quite a bit...seems at times like that you're sitting at a machine wasting your life...bit like queuing for buses down here that never arrive on time...LOL...good post...great big hugs...XXX

You're absolutely right of course. The key point I think is that the amazing technology doesn't have to speed up your life. You can potter around on the net just as slowly as you can in your house.

Tom.
