May Day Celebrations ...

by philghodg @ 2008-05-05 - 22:52:21

Today Mrs H and myself went off to one of the local villages, Newborough, to observe their tradition of Well Dressing. This was something we had not experienced before and we were looking forward to it immensely.

We arrived and parked up just after 11am and were in time to see the May Queen's procession leave the church and set off toward the first of the Village wells.

The theme for this year was apparently Shakespeare and the first well had been decorated with a Romeo and Juliet theme. The priest performed two prayers and Lord of the Dance was sung.

Then off to the second well for another prayer and a rendition of He's Got the Whole World in his hands.

The third well was outside the local primary school and after it's prayer, Give Me joy in My Heart was sung.

The final well was at the memorial hall and a prayer was said for all those from the village that had passed on.

So having enjoyed the Well Dressing procession, it was time to go and view some of the events taking place. The highlight was probably the Italian market where crepes, olives of all descriptions and cakes could be bought. Truly splendid.

There was Maypole dancing and Morrismen, and even the sun ventured out.

After a quick tour of the now muddy school field and it's numerous stalls and a barbecued Italian sausage in a roll, we went to the church to take in the flower festival. And splendid it was too. Mrs H has taken some pics so hopefully these will get posted when they have made their way through the ether from her laptop to mine.

A thoroughly enjoyable day was had and plans are now under way to attend the Horn Dance in another of our neighbouring villages, Abbots Bromley

Felt a bit that it was yet another pagan ritual being hijacked by Christianity.

Ok, religious moan out of the way. It was a lovely day
