Training for Cardiff

by philghodg @ 2008-03-10 - 00:17:52

After giving the Cardiff Half Marathon a miss last year I've decided to get back on track with it again this year. Not only that, I'm determined to get super fit for it and break the two hour barrier for the first time.

Training started just after Christmas and involved enrolling at the local health club so that I could use the treadmill and weights. I have lost a good 5 KG in the two months and am reaping the benefits health wise.

Now the lighter nights have arrived I've managed to get onto road work and have progressed from 3.3 miles to 5.3 miles. Believe me, with 7 months to go this is good going for me. The last few attempts I didn't start training until the summer!!

So, today I knocked a minute of my best time for 5.3M, clocking in at a healthy (for me) 48 mins and 54 secs. This works out at 9.2 minute miles giving a projected time of 2 hours dead for the 13.1 miles I'll have to run in October.

So it's on the weights tomorrow and wednesday and then back on the road on thursday. If I can get the projected time below 2 hours I can move on to the next level, 7+ miles.

Aaaah........ Cardiff! Just make sure the marathon doesn't coincide with a day when the Bluebirds are playing Millwall at home!
